 FOR OUTBOUND EXCHANGE STUDENTS:

To qualify for the International Student Exchange Program MBA students must:

  • Be in the top 40% of the entire MBA batch during the core courses (first eight months)
  • Have no grade lower than a P- (about 80-82 on a 100 grading scale)
  • Have submitted an acceptable final MRR (thesis)
  • Have no dysfunctional behavior

LANGUAGE                               Students who are not native speakers of English must have English language
REQUIREMENT:                       proficiency equivalent to a 600/250 TOEFL score.
 


Learning Methodology:      Class Format: Primary use of case method (discussions); field research by hands-on filed projects; corporate internships; management games and simulations. The AIM culture emphasizes analysis of facts, exploration of alternative courses of action, and simulates real life managerial decision-making experiences.
                                               
                                                Attendance:  Attendance is mandatory. Students must attend at least eighty percent (80%) of the total sessions in a subject to pass.   
 
                                                Class Participation:  Public class participation is encouraged. The percentage varies, but class participation counts for at least 50% of students’ final grades.
                                               
                                                Other Learning Modalities: Exchange students are required to participate and accomplish group and individual reports and projects.
 
GRADES:                                  Grades are based on class participation (at least 50% in most subjects), quizzes, examinations, group reports and presentations, and attendance.
 
EXAMS:                                    Exams are given on a case-to-case basis. In lieu of exams, students are required to submit individual reflection papers, reports, and group projects.
 
QUALIFICATIONS                    - Students must be in their senior year of the school’s MBA program.
FOR EXCHANGE:                       - Students must have at least two years of full time work experience.
                                                    - Students must be proficient in English.

·         Preferably one week before orientation day, to allow enough time to decide on accommodations, and see AIM campus and surroundings.
·         Because of the timing of our school year, many western exchange students come one or two months before the start of school, in order to tour the Philippines’ many beaches (e.g. Boracay, Puerto Galera) and other tourist attractions.

·         Provides information on what to expect in AIM and in Makati, requirements and schedules, how to relate with the locals in the area, etc.

·         Students enroll in five (5) electives the week before the start of the term. On-line registration or email of chosen courses to Program Associate is possible.

·         Case methodology – students discuss real organization / company scenario in class.
·         Class participation comprises 50% of students’ final grade.
·         Attendance is mandatory. Absences of over 20% of total number of class sessions result in a failing mark.
·         Class size: 60 students.
·         Five (5) elective courses required.
·         Dress code is casual, but shorts are not allowed.
 
 
September to December 2009
Asian Industry Immersion Program
·         Students may join the Asian Industry Immersion elective which will bring them to Asian countries and visit Asian industries and companies. Students will be introduced to Asian Business Systems.

SCHOOL FACILITIES: 
 
Classrooms:                    Amphitheater-type caserooms with modern audiovisual and multimedia equipment.
 
Network computing:       The entire AIM campus is broadband and WIFI-ready (802.11b). Numerous public PCs are
                                        available throughout the campus for e-mail and surfing. 
 
Dormitory:                      The dorm is in the middle of the AIM campus and can accommodate 270 students. A suite with two
                                        rooms and a common study area is occupied by six students, (three students per room)
 
Library:                           Houses books and periodicals, including a World Bank collection, management research reports,  
                                        and an integrated database catalog.
 
Cafeteria:                        Serves local, international and vegetarian food.
 
Location:                         AIM is in the center of Makati, the Philippines’ business district, and is adjacent to the old city of 
                                        Manila. Makati is a safe, clean city, and AIM students are within short walks of Greenbelt and 
                                        Glorietta (myayala.com) malls, which offer complete, state-of-the-art dining, shopping, theater,  
                                        and recreational facilities.
 
                                   
                                         Manila itself is within two hours’ flight of Boracay, Puerto Galera, Palawan (El Nido and Puerto 
                                         Princesa), Sagada, Baguio, Cebu, Davao, and other sites, all world-renowned eco-tourism sites
                                         for beach-combing, scuba diving and snorkeling, fishing, surfing, windsurfing, spelunking, and
                                         trekking.
 
 
Housing:                           Students may opt to stay in the dormitory or rent outside the campus. 
 
AIM Dormitory:               The monthly fee for a dormitory space is approximately US$300. Students must send reservation
                                        fees of US $100 one month before arrival.   Exchange students usually stay in the AIM dormitory 
                                        during their first month and transfer to more private accommodations afterwards.
 
Off-Campus                 Pension houses, apartments, & studio-type rooms within walking distance to AIM are
                                       available. These accommodations usually range from US$300 to US $600 monthly.
 
 
 
BANKING:                  Exchange students are advised to have their cash or travelers’ cheques in US dollar currency. The 
                                   AMEX office near AIM, however, charges at least PhP 5.00 (US 15 cents) per transaction. CIRRUS, 
                                   INTERACT and other ATM machines are accessible.
                              
                               Most banks require a minimum balance of US$ 500 to 1,000 for bank accounts and hold all travelers’ check deposits for approximately 45 days. Thus, it is not advisable to open a bank account for a short stay. An alternative is to get the money wired, costing only as much as the bank charges in your country.

PRE-ARRIVAL INFORMATION FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS
 
A.         Guidelines for Single Entry 47 (A) 2 Special Non-Immigrant Visa Application
 
All students and participants in the regular programs conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) are issued a special non-immigrant visa under Section 47 (A) 2, by the Philippine Government per department Order 3-70 dated February 25, 1970, Foreign Affairs Circular No. 9-72 dated January 14, 1972 and FSC-4179 dated March 1, 1979.
 
Do not secure a student visa. Students from AIM use 47(A)(2) Special Non-Immigrant Visa. This visa allows you to stay in the Philippines for as long as you are a student. However, since you will stay beyond 59 days, you are required to register at the Bureau of Immigration [This procedure will be done when you get to Manila. You will need Php 5,500.00 or about US$130.00 for the visa extension and the processing of your ACR. Our Student Services Admissions & Registration (SSAR) Office will assist you in fixing the validity of your visa with multiple entry privileges and other immigration requirements upon arrival at AIM.
 
When applying for your visa from the Philippine Embassy in your country, please bring with you 1) Passport 2) AIM acceptance letter 3) Medical Certificates / results of Medical tests / X-ray plate 4) Police Clearance certificate as these may be required by the embassy (Pls. Get in touch with the Philippine Embassy/Consulate in your country for visa forms, fees, procedures and embassy requirements).
 
For married students, this visa also applies to your spouse and children. We suggest that when you apply for the Philippine visa, apply at the same time for your spouse and children even if they will follow at a later date within the validity of the visa. When you come to Manila, please bring a copy of your Marriage Contract and Birth Certificate/s of your children translated in English.
 
 
B.                  What to Bring
 
1.       Philippine weather is generally warm and humid.   Temperatures range from 22 to 35 degrees celsius. June to November is also monsoon season—it typically rains in the afternoons--so a portable umbrella is recommended.
 
2.       Classroom attire is informal and casual—comfortable pants, polo shirts, and sneakers are normal student wear. Shorts and slippers however are not allowed in the classroom. The air-conditioning may be cold compared to the outside temperature so students usually bring a light jacket or sweater for classroom use. We recommend that you bring a business suit for meetings and interviews, if applicable.
 
3.       AIM has a gym and swimming pool, so bring sports shoes and swimsuits.
 
4.       Most AIM students own a laptop computer; most also are WIFI-ready. We recommend you bring a laptop for your class projects and for emailing and surfing. 
 
5.       Electricity is available in both 220 and 110 volts at 60 cycles.
 
 
 
C.               Before Your Departure
 
Before you depart for the Philippines, please inform Ms. Anna dela Cruz (adelacruz@student.aim.edu / +632 892 4011 local 285) of your arrival airline and flight number.
 
 
D.                  Upon Arrival
 
After you clear through Immigration and Customs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), proceed to the AVIS Transport Counter to arrange for your transportation to AIM located at the airport lobby. The cost of transportation to AIM is approximately US$20.00.
 
When you arrive at AIM, proceed to the MBA Program desk on the second floor to register and to check your dormitory accommodations. If you arrive on a holiday or after office hours, get your room key from the front desk at the dormitory lobby.
 
It will be useful to have a few hundred pesos when you arrive so that you can cover incidental expenses during the weekend. Banks are not open on weekends and you may need some cash for your meals and transportation. We therefore recommend that you get some local currency (pesos, about 50 for one US dollar) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) upon arrival.
 
From Mondays to Fridays, you will be able to exchange foreign currency at the many banks and foreign exchange counters located near the AIM campus.
 
 
 
E.            AIM Dormitory Accommodations
 
The AIM complex consists of the six-story quarters for men (main building) and the third floor annex for women. Dormitory rooms with built-in furnishings accommodate three occupants each. There are two rooms per dormitory suite.
 
Incoming students who wish (MM/MDM) or are required (MBM) to stay in the dormitory are to make reservations by paying the reservation fee of US$100.00 upon confirmation of their attendance to the program they are enrolling into. This reservation is non-refundable but may be applied to the dorm fees (A breakage fee of US$ 100.00 is charged which is refundable at the end of the program.) Should you decide later on that you do not wish to stay in the dormitory anymore, a penalty equivalent to one month’s rent is applied
 

F.        Housing Outside AIM

 
Married students bringing their families to the Philippines need to look for their own housing. It is suggested that married students come at least one month ahead of their families. The Student Services can help students locate suitable housing outside AIM.
 
 
G.              Registration and Fees
 
The registration for the program will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. along the corridor fronting the Admissions Office on the dates stated in your acceptance letter. The program fee is due upon registration or may be paid in several installments with the corresponding interests (please see attached Schedule of Payments). You may pay your school fees in foreign currency or in Philippine pesos. Foreign currency payments are converted using the prevailing bank rates (please see section C of this pre-arrival information).
